Rooftop garden, touch of green in urban civilization
  Date : 29-03-2024

Shahida Aroby: The rooftop garden is a small attempt to keep a touch of `green` in the urban civilization surrounded by bricks, wood and stone.  Nowadays, the popularity and importance of the rooftop garden has been increased, but the idea of it, isn`t new one.  It is thought that the `Hanging garden of Babylon` of history was also made up of a combination of roof and verandah.  In the evolution of time, that rooftop garden has become  the hobby to many green-loving people, a leisure companion or a source of cheerful mind. Rooftop garden can also play a helpful role in controlling the balance of the environment.  In this global pandemic, when the whole world is captive, a little rooftop garden made for the sake of hobbies, can help someone find a little peace.

People are moving to the city in search of livelihood .  As a  result is increasingthe number of  factories,  pollution are increasing day by day. According to a survey, empty roofs occupy 80 percent place of the city.  There is no opportunity to create forestry on the land.  Which  has become the main cause of  rising  temperature in the city.  At the same time, it increases the risk of natural disasters like earthquakes, cyclones and droughts.  In this case, there is no alternative to make rooftop garden to restore the balance of the environment.  Researchers say that when there is a garden on the roof, the tree can absorb the excess heat of the environment and reduce the temperature by releasing water,  in the process of perspiration.  Not only that, this hobby rooftop garden can be used as a `factory` to reduce the level of carbon dioxide from the environment and produce oxygen.

Over the past few decades, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of rooftop gardens in the city to maintain the green touch in one`s own home or to think of natural balance.  The program `Hridoye Mati O Manush` directed by Shykh Seraj, publishes the report of thousands of tree lovers who have developed the admirable projects like rooftop farming in their homes.  Not only them, but also many others are also encouraging in making  a rooftop garden after seeing them. They are getting  the right instructions for gardening and caring for trees.  The government has taken the initiative to waive 10 percent holding tax to encourage the construction of rooftop gardens.  Taking advantage of that, anyone can build a small rooftop garden in this leisure.  As well as spending time, it can also play a role in meeting the nutritional needs of family members.  Tree fairs are celebrated in different parts of the country every year.  Most of the trees, sold at the fair are used to decorate the stairs, windows or roof of houses.  This scenario indicates, people have become very passionate  about keeping a touch of green in their homes now.

Due to the health and safety of the students,  Educational institutions have been closed for more than a year, during the Corona pandemic.  During this long vacation, many students are interested to make rooftop gardens.  On the one hand, they are getting the chance to be close to nature. As a result  the urban roofs are turning into a piece of green carpet.  Even the daily life has changed due to the Corona pandemic. School and college-going students now spend their days with mobiles, laptops and other electronic devices for doing online class and social networking. Excess  use of these devices can make various physical and mental problems of the students such as eye problem , irritable mood, mental exhaustion and other complications. Making a rooftop garden keep them away from these problems. Elder members of the family can also keep themselves busy and happy by working  the garden and producing flowers and fruits, which will make their life meaningful.

In this age of mechanics, this rooftop garden can serve as a great way to take care of the garden together with family members or to spend time with them.  That is helpful to creat strong family bonding. In this time of the Corona pandemic, when many busy members of the family have got a little leisure, by creating  a rooftop garden they can utilize their time.  It is hoped that this will be helpful to remove the stress caused by the long break from daily outside activities.  Now is the right time for the young generation, they can take part to create a livable city and a pollution-free environment.

There is no alternative to building a rooftop garden so that future generations of the country, can search for their roots in contact with trees, soil or nature.  A `rooftop garden` can be created not only in one`s own home, but also in the workplace or in an educational institution, which may be a project to be emulated by many in the future.  And with the implementation of that, nature may get back to its eternal form.  Thousands of rooftop gardens should be built using this leisure time, in the global pandemic.  So that before the bitterness of captivity consumes our life, a piece of green garden enchants the heart.  Let the urban rooftops be filled with flowers and crops.  Let the green spread to every soul.
