NEW DELHI Correspondent: Bollywood’s one of the most versatile and talented actor Irrfan Khan passed away today at a Mumbai hospital at the age of 54. Khan, who was admitted to Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital with a colon infection, died on Wednesday afternoon, media reports said citing the late actor’s family statement.
Khan, one of India’s most finest actors, was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour in March 2018, soon after which he flew to London for treatment.
He returned to India in February 2019 to shoot his last film “Angrezi Medium” and flew back to London after a brief stay. The actor returned to India in September last year after surgery and treatment in London.
Born to Muslim parents in the village of Tonk near Jaipur, Irrfan’s mother had a royal lineage but his father was a self-made man. Eldest of three siblings, Irrfan joined National School of Drama after his father’s death. Ironically, his mother, Saeeda Begum, died four days before his death, reports said.
Apart from Bollywood’s films, Irrfan Khan also starred a number of Hollywood movies that helped him become the India’s most celebrated face in the west.
In India, his most famous films include his debut, the Academy Award nominated Salaam Bombay, Maqbool (2004), Paan Singh Tomar (2011), The Lunchbox (2013), Haider (2014), Gunday (2014), Piku (2015) and Talvar (2015) and Hindi Medium (2017).
The passing away of Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan sent shockwaves across the country and beyond the borders. Khan was an unparalleled artist who received the country’s fourth highest civilian honour “Padma Shri” in the year 2011.
Besides people from the film fraternity, both Bollywood and Hollywood, scores of politicians and diplomats expressed their sadness and condoled Khan’s demise.
