Flooding lingers as major rivers swell
  Date : 25-04-2024

Public sufferings from flooding in the northern and central regions of the country have mounted as water of swelling rivers has inundated fresh areas, leaving several million people marooned.

Nineteen major rivers were flowing over the danger mark at 30 points on Wednesday amid heavy rainfall and onrush of upstream water, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).
Nearly 3.04 million flood victims in 21 districts have been passing miserable life amid the second spell of floods in the country, according to the National Disaster Response Coordination Centre (NDRRC).

The displaced people are staying under open sky as their dwellings have been washed away by floodwater while waterborne diseases like diarrhoea have broken out in the flood-hit areas.

Local sources said although the government has sped up distribution of relief goods among flood victims, but these are not adequate.

Some villagers have been evacuated from several flood-hit areas while many others have been found stranded.

Erosion has taken a serious turn in many places in northern and central regions due to strong current.

The Water Development Board (WDB) authorities have been working for emergency protection at the damaged points of various flood control embankments.
A large number of trees and crops on a vast tract of land have been washed away by floodwater and strong current.

Because of heavy rainfall and upstream water from bordering areas, the water flow in Brahmaputra has increased rapidly and it will continue for the next 24 to 48 hours, said Md Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan of the FFWC.

The Meghna River is in rising trend and it will continue for the next 28 hours while the rivers around Dhaka city will continue to rise in the next 24 hours. Balu river at Demra points may cross the danger level, it said.

River water was rising at 72 of the 101 points observed by the warning centre the morning.
