Imran Khan says high level of pollution is contributing to rising number of coronavirus cases
International Desk: Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has expressed fear that during the winter season a second wave of Covid-19 could hit the country particularly in cities where level of pollution is very high.
“I am afraid due to pollution in cities like Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and other cities where level of pollution can lead to exponential rise and second wave of virus in the country,” he said addressing a ceremony titled ‘Clean Green Encouragement Awards’ in Islamabad on Monday.
While asking the people to strictly follow preventive measures against Covid-19, the premier said the entire world acknowledged Pakistan’s strategy against the contagion.
“WHO said Pakistan not only defeated the virus but also saved its economy while curbing the spread of coronavirus.”
He blamed the loss of green cover and lack of plantation drive over the years for the rising level of pollution in the country.
“You cannot quantify the losses that occurred due to the pollution,” said the prime minister, adding that he himself witnessed the destruction caused due to the deforestation in several cities including Lahore. “During the last 20 years, 70 per cent of Lahore’s trees have been cut down”.
Pak Prime Minister of Pakistan launched the Clean Green Pakistan Movement (CGPI) on November 25, 2019.
The major focus of the initiative is to inculcate a spirit of competition on cleanliness initiatives in the cities and facilitate the behavioral change, building positive attitudes, institutional strengthening for better water, sanitation and hygiene services and facilities
