Losing income in a severe lockdown and living a miserable life
  Date : 29-03-2024

Md. Naiem, Jhalokati: Every morning a crowd of needy people gathers in front of the Deputy Commissioner`s Office, Municipality and Sadar Upazila Parishad. He is running from one government office to another in the hope of relief. They sometimes going in front of the house of the rich.

No one is keeping an eye on these people who are in a miserable condition after losing their income in a severe lockdown in Jhalakati. Despite the relief efforts at this time last year, no wealthy people have stood by the needy people in the lockdown this year.

Nur Jahan Begum, 60, of West Jhalokati in the municipality, used to work as a housemaid before the lockdown. Due to lack of work, his family is now spending their days without food. He had been waiting for relief in front of the Jhalakati Deputy Commissioner`s Office for the last two days.

Nurjahan Begum lamented, "If you go to work in someone else`s house, the owner of the house will not be able to do such work." Meanwhile, there is no rice in the house, the landlord wants rent. Where to go? The people of the association want installments. Five members of the house did not eat for three days. That is why I have come to the door of DC Sir for relief.

Not only Nurjahan Begum; Hundreds of needy people including Hasi Begum (45), disabled Abdul Aziz (64) and Maya Begum (73) have gathered in front of the deputy commissioner`s office hoping for some relief. Most of them are forty-four women and husbands abandoned or widowed. In the eyes of all of them, hunger and unknown panic are working thinking about the uncertain future of the family. However, the district administration and municipal authorities say, this time no relief has come officially.

Speaking to the victims, it was learned that the needy people in Jhalakathi were in dire straits due to the announcement of 14 days of severe lockdown from April 14 for a week and then till April 28. In the beginning, many people broke their capital, but on the ninth day of the lockdown, people are feeling the lack.

Monir Hossain, 45, of Chandkathi area of the city, said, ‘I used to work in public transport. Our car is locked in the lockdown. I am in trouble with my family. No one is giving relief. TCB cannot afford to buy the product. We have to die without eating after a few days.

Hasi Begum of Kalabagan area of the city said, ‘I am the only one earning at home. I run my family by working in people`s homes. Now the owner`s condition is bad, he can`t hire us. There is no way to go without the help of others.

According to the relevant sources, 50,000 people of the district have received relief assistance through government grants, public representatives, various organizations and the rich as government grants during the lockdown at this time last year. But no relief aid has officially arrived this year. There is no initiative to distribute relief at the individual level.

In this regard, the Mayor of Jhalokati Municipality Liaquat Ali Talukder said, "Every day in the lockdown, people are crowding in front of the municipality in the hope of relief. There has been no official help this year. We have met with the municipal council to decide what can be done for the people. Personally, my family and I are helping people in any way we can.

Deputy Commissioner Md Johar Ali said, ‘So far no government assistance has been received. He said, every day needy people are crowding in front of my office. However, I hope that the two thousand five hundred rupees of the Prime Minister`s gift will go to the hands of the people soon.
