  Date : 18-04-2024

KM Rubel, Faridpur: In Faridpur, the city Awami League meeting and iftar mahfil have been disrupted due to police obstruction. The meeting was scheduled to be held at the district Awami League office at 5 pm on Wednesday. Leaders have to go back without meeting.

Sheikh Mahatab Ali Methu, acting president of the city Awami League, said the meeting was convened on Wednesday in view of the Corona situation and the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr. The meeting started at the district Awami League office at the corner of the city police station. The district president was informed about the meeting earlier. The meeting was attended by the presidents and general secretaries of 27 wards of Faridpur municipality. The meeting was to work out a list of 60 people to help each ward. Besides, an Iftar party was also organized on the occasion.

"When we start work on the meeting at around 5.30 pm, Faridpur Kotwali Police Station OC MA Jalil went to the district Awami League office and asked us to close the meeting," he said.

Witnesses said that at that time the city Awami League leaders had a quarrel with the police. At one stage, the president of the meeting Sheikh Mahatab Ali Methu and acting general secretary Moniruzzaman Monir gave a short speech and said that the meeting will be reconvened later. We could not finish the meeting due to police obstruction. Later, Sheikh Mahatab Ali Methu and Moniruzzaman ordered all Monir to leave the place peacefully.

Confirming the incident, Faridpur Kotwali Police Station OC MA Jalil said the district Awami League leaders were not invited to the city Awami League meeting. The city Awami League was not allowed to hold the meeting as it could cause a commotion.

District Awami League president Subal Chandra Saha said there was a dilemma over the city Awami League committee. At this stage, if one party meets, the other party can cause problems. Besides, a meeting of the district Awami League has been called on May 1. We did not want such a meeting or any chaotic environment before that. For this, the general secretary of the party asked the law enforcement agencies to look into the matter.

Faridpur city Awami League co-presidents Shafiuddin Ahmed Shafi, Mahmud Hossain, organizing secretary Bikash Sarkar Mithu, industry and commerce affairs secretary Nurul Amin Bappi, law secretary Ad Tushar and other ward Awami League presidents and general secretaries were present at the meeting.
