AL takes programme on Sheikh Hasina’s homecoming day
  Date : 20-04-2024

Online Desk : Awami League (AL) has chalked out programmes on the occasion of AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s homecoming day on May 17.

AL General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today announced the programme at a regular press conference on current issues at his official residence here.

As part of the programme, AL’s information and research affairs sub-committee will arrange an exhibition on information and news clipping on May 16 and 17. Inaugural ceremony will be held at on the premises of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi road number 32 at 11am tomorrow.
Dhaka City North unit of AL will arrange a discussion at 23 Bangabandhu Avenue at 11am on May 17 while AL’s Dhaka City South unit will arrange a doa mahfil and discussion at Mahanagar Natyamancha here at 3pm on that day.

Special doa and prayers will be offered at mosques, temples, churches and pagodas marking the day.

Quader said the homecoming day of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be celebrated on limited scale this year too following health safety guidelines and other rules, set by the government in view of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s homecoming day is celebrated on May 17 recalling her returning home on that day in 1981 after six years exile.

Boarding on an aircraft of the Indian Airlines, Awami League President Sheikh Hasina reached the then Kurmitola Airport in Dhaka from the Indian capital of New Delhi via Kolkata at 4.30pm on that day.

Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was brutally killed along with most of his family members on August 15 in 1975 and his two daughters – Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana – fortunately escaped the brutal assassination as they stayed abroad.

In a national council session of the Awami League held in February, 1981, Sheikh Hasina was elected president of AL in her absence and then she returned to the country on May 17 defying different obstacles from the then government. BSS
