Hundreds of people returning to Dhaka after Eid holidays
  Date : 24-04-2024

Online Report : Hundreds of people have started returning to Dhaka as the offices, mills and factories are going to be reopened from Sunday after the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays.

Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader has expressed deep concern saying that the coronavirus transmission is likely to beyond of control due to the arrival of so many people to the capital from their respective village homes.

However, passengers said they have become compelled to reaching Dhaka as long distant bus services have remained suspended.

A passenger coming from his village home in the southern region of the country said they used to celebrate longer Eid vacation in the past. But, they are returning to their working places in the capital knowing that the lockdown may be extended further.

Lockdown was extended until May 16 to check the spread of coronavirus transmission.

State Minister for Public Administration Farhad Hossain said the lockdown will be extended up to May 23, and a notification will be issued in this regard on Sunday (May 16).

Restriction was imposed on the movement of long-distant bus services during the period of lockdown.

Ferries were given permission to cross the river with trucks carrying emergency goods, and ambulances carrying dead bodies and sick patients. But, the common people were seen crossing the river to reach their village homes for celebrating Eid holidays. Homebound people of the country`s southern districts used the ferries to cross the river Padma as the government suspended plying of motor launches and speed boats.

Many passengers have alleged that they had to pay additional charges to reach their destinations.

In spite of it, pressure of Dhaka-bound passengers at Kathalbari-Shimulia and Doulatdia-Paturia routes started rising on Saturday morning.

However, the pressure of passengers was not so much as it was seen when they were leaving Dhaka for their village homes.

Hundreds of people were seen waiting for ferries in scorching heat hours after hours. Whenever a ferry anchored at a ferry ghat, people thronged on board of it. None of the people on the ferries was seen following health guidelines.

Asked, a passenger said people are returning to Dhaka as movement of public transports has been suspended. People`s sufferings would have gone down substantially if there was long-distant bus services plying on the roads. They also would have followed the health guidelines.

As many people were coming to Dhaka to join their workplaces, many were also seen rushing for their village homes on Saturday to celebrate Eid holidays with their near and dear ones. People, particularly those who could not leave Dhaka due to heavy rush of crowd before Eid, they though that they would be able to go home on the following day of Eid conveniently.

But, witnessing so many people at ferry ghat, a passenger got surprised. "I though I would be able to go to my village home conveniently after Eid. But, I got surprised witnessing so many people at the ferry ghat. So, many people left the Dhaka city before Eid. Where so many people have come from?"
