Indian farmers’ protest receives international support
  Date : 16-04-2024

Muhammad Ullah: Growing international support to farmers’ protest in India has caused embarrassment for Narendra Modi-led fascist regime.

A report released by Kashmir Media Service, today, maintained that several international personalities including singers and activists have come out in support of protesting Indian farmers.

Tens of thousands of farmers have been camping out on New Delhi’s borders since November last year, demanding withdrawal of 3 farm laws imposed by the Modi government.

The report said that Swedish climate activist, Greta Thunberg, wrote on Twitter, “We stand in solidarity with the farmer protests in India.” It said, the US pop superstar Rihanna’s tweet in favour of Indian farmers prompted outpouring of support from the world for the Indian farmers. The tweets by international celebrities extending support to the protesting farmers have angered India, it added.

The report pointed out that besides international solidarity, the farmers’ movement has been getting support from much of the Opposition in India. Since taking office in 2014, Modi’s government has faced increased criticism for suppressing dissent in India, it said.

Political experts are of the opinion that Modi wants the poor farmers to die of hunger so that he can fill the stomachs of his rich friends. They say that Modi’s denial to withdraw 3 contentious farm laws is indicative of his insensitivity towards the farmers’ plight.

The leaders of farmers unions say that through new anti-agriculture laws, Modi wants to throw farmers at the mercy of corporate interests. They say that the farmers are determined to continue their protest until 3 farm laws are scrapped unconditionally.
