Dhaka residents faced widespread disruption on Saturday evening as heavy rainfall triggered waterlogging and brought daily life to a near standstill across the capital.

Persistent downpours flooded roads in several areas, including Sutrapur in Old Dhaka, turning streets into rivers. Vehicles were forced to drive with headlights on during daylight hours, while many pedestrians braved the deluge, seen walking through knee-deep water, drenched and struggling to reach their destinations.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) confirmed that Cyclone Mocha—previously affecting parts of Myanmar and India—has weakened into a low-pressure area, continuing to influence weather conditions across the country.

In the past 24 hours, Sirajganj recorded the highest rainfall at 166 mm, while Dhaka received 32 mm of rain between afternoon and evening. Other affected regions include Tangail, Chapainawabganj, Satkhira, and parts of Rajshahi and Mymensingh divisions.

Meteorologist Kazi Zebunnesa warned of further adverse weather, saying another low-pressure system may develop over the Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours. This could trigger rain or thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds of 45–60 km/h in coastal and central districts. River ports in vulnerable areas have been advised to hoist the Number One caution signal.

The Met Office forecast light to moderate rain in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, and Sylhet divisions, with isolated areas likely to experience heavy to very heavy showers over the coming days.

With Dhaka’s drainage system already under strain, city authorities remain on alert amid fears of prolonged flooding and traffic chaos if rains continue.
