Gazipur fire: Two more dies, death toll rises to 16

Online Report : With the demise of another two people, who sustained burn injuries in a fire caused by a gas cylinder blast in Gazipur`s Kaliakair upazila on March 13, the death toll from the incident has risen to 16 on Sunday.

Deceased Nadim Hossain, 22, and Lalon Mia, 24, a garment worker, died while undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

Nadim, a tenant of the area, who had suffered with 55 percent injuries, died at the hospital around 8.30pm on Saturday while Lalon Mia, with 45 percent burns, breathed his last around 3:00am on Sunday at the intensive care unit (ICU), said Dr Tarikul Islam, resident surgeon of the hospital.

On March 13, at least 35 people, including women and children, sustained burn injuries after a gas cylinder exploded in Kaliakair on Wednesday evening.


One patient was admitted with 100 percent burns while three were hospitalised with 95 percent burns, and 16 were hospitalised with over 50 percent burns, according to sources at the hospital.

Locals said a fire broke out from a gas cylinder at a house in Telir Chala area of Mouchak in Kaliakair around 6 pm on Wednesday. When the residents of the house threw it out on the road, the explosion occurred, leaving several others also injured.
