  Date : 05-05-2024

Online Report : The authorities of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) on Thursday closed the university for indefinite period amid students` protest over the death of two students in a road accident.

The decision was taken at an emergency academic meeting of the Academic Council of CUET on Thursday.

The authorities also asked the male students to vacate the halls by Thursday and female students to leave the dormitories by 10am on Friday.

University Director of Student Welfare Prof Rezaul Karim said that the agitated students had been demonstrating since the morning over the death of their two fellows.

The administration tried to calm them but failed so the Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Mohammad Rafiqul Alam held an emergency academic meeting and announced the closure of university.

All academic activities including exams will remain suspended during the period, he said.

Meanwhile, after announcement of the closure, the agitated students locked the VC’s office and set fire to one of the two buses they had confiscated.

The situation on campus remains tense, Prof Rezaul said adding that security forces deployed to maintain order.

On April 22, Shanto Saha, a student of the 20th batch of Civil Engineering Department of CUET, and Toufiq Hossain, of the same department, died and another student Zakaria Himu was injured after a bus of ‘Shah Amanat paribahan` ran over their motorcycle on Chattogram-Kaptai Road in Rangunia of Chattogram.

Following the incident, students of CUET had been demonstrating blocking the Chattogram-Kaptai road by setting fire on logs and tyres to press home their 10-point demand for safe road.

On Wednesday afternoon, police arrested the bus driver Md Tazul Islam from the Kotwali area of Chattogram city.
