Chattogram port is set to undergo significant changes as part of a new automation initiative, announced by Maritime and Textile Adviser Brigadier General (Retd) Dr. M. Sakhawat Hossain.
The initiative aims to streamline port operations and reduce the time it takes to handle containers, which has long been a challenge for Bangladesh`s busiest port.
Speaking to reporters after inspecting the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) on Tuesday, Dr. Sakhawat highlighted that while container handling times have improved from the previous 10 to 15 days, the current performance still needs further enhancement.
He believes that automation will play a key role in significantly speeding up the loading and unloading of goods, thereby improving overall operational efficiency.
During his three-day tour of the port facilities, Dr. Sakhawat also addressed several long-standing issues. He pointed out that many irregularities had been discovered, particularly in licensing, where unqualified individuals have received licenses but are not actively involved in port work. Some have reportedly sold their licenses to third parties. The Adviser assured that these concerns are being addressed, with steps already being taken to rectify the situation.
One of the major challenges the port faces is congestion caused by containers and vehicles that have been left idle for years—some containers have remained untouched for up to 20 years, and vehicles have been inactive for over a decade. Dr. Sakhawat emphasized the importance of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) auctioning off these items to free up space for expanding port operations. He expressed his intention to discuss this matter with the NBR chairman upon his return to Dhaka.
In addition to addressing these operational challenges, Dr. Sakhawat announced changes to the procurement process at the port. He stated that the Direct Procurement Method (DPM) will no longer be used for tenders. Instead, all tenders will now be open, ensuring greater transparency and efficiency in the process.
During his visit, Dr. Sakhawat inspected various parts of the port, including the Patenga Container Terminal, Laldia Char, and the Bay terminal project area. He was accompanied by Chattogram Port Authority Chairman Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs Md. Muhidul Islam, and other high-ranking officials.
The automation initiative, coupled with these reforms, is expected to modernize the operations at Chattogram port, making it more competitive in the global maritime trade sector and helping Bangladesh`s blue economy grow.
