Continuous rain worsens M`singh flood, 25 more villages submerged

Heavy rainfall in Mymensingh has worsened the flood situation, with 25 additional villages in Haluaghat, Dobaura, and Fulbaria upazilas submerged, leaving over two lakh residents remain stranded.

According to Mymensingh District Relief and Disaster Rehabilitation Officer Md. Sanowar Hossain, the Kangsha and Netai rivers saw a rise in water levels due to continuous rain from early Tuesday morning until 8 AM. In response, the government has allocated 7 lakh taka in cash and 63 tons of rice for relief efforts.

Additionally, various political and volunteer organizations are providing ongoing support. If the rain subsides, water levels are expected to decrease.

Hossain further mentioned that several primary and secondary schools in the affected areas have been converted into shelters, with hundreds of people, including women and children, taking refuge. These centers are providing dry food and clean water to those in need.

However, residents of the Ailatli Ashrayan Project in Dobaura upazila, located near the Kangsha River, are facing increased hardship as floodwaters entered several homes on Tuesday morning.

Amena Begum, a resident of the Ashrayan Project, said, "For the past week, we`ve been surrounded by water. It`s been very difficult with the children. Only one organization provided us with food on Monday, but no one from the administration has checked on us yet."

Another resident, Sahab Uddin, expressed concern over the rising water levels, saying that living near the river keeps them in constant fear of their homes being flooded.

Minti Rani Pal, another affected resident, added, "The joy of Durga Puja has faded due to the floods. We can hardly find food for two meals a day, so how can we celebrate? If the government helps, we might at least manage to get by with our children."

Dobaura Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nishat Sharmin said that the water levels have risen slightly due to Tuesday morning`s rain, submerging new areas. The situation should normalize if the rain stops, and relief efforts are ongoing, including the distribution of dry food and medicines to flood victims.

Fulbaria UNO ABM Ariful Islam reported that four unions, including Balia Union, were flooded after a few hours of rain in the morning, affecting 16 additional villages.

Haluaghat UNO Ershadul Ahmed stated that continuous rainfall and water from upstream hill torrents caused the flooding in the area. While water levels in upstream areas are receding, low-lying regions remain flooded, impacting 18,000 families.

A formal request for comprehensive assistance will be submitted to the ministry after assessing the overall damage, he added.
