Batters patience level can be better: Mushtaq

Bangladesh`s spin bowling coach, Mushtaq Ahmed, emphasized the need for greater patience among batters to succeed in Test cricket, following a dismal performance on Day 2 of the second and final Test against South Africa.

The team found itself in a precarious position at 38-4, chasing South Africa`s formidable total of 575-6 declared.

Mushtaq`s comments came in response to the ongoing struggles of the batting lineup, asserting that the issue lies not in skill, but rather in the batters` ability to remain patient during critical moments of the game. "I disagree with the notion of a lack of skill. Perhaps their patience level can be improved. Test cricket is all about adapting to the situation," he told reporters in Chattogram.

He highlighted the importance of surviving challenging periods in the game, referring to Shadman Islam`s unfortunate dismissal caught down the leg-side. "We need to enhance our focus on these aspects," he added.

South Africa`s innings featured three maiden centuries from different batters—Tony de Zorzi, Tristan Stubbs, and Wiaan Mulder—marking a rare occurrence in Test cricket history. Bangladesh now trails by 537 runs, facing the daunting prospect of avoiding a follow-on, needing an additional 338 runs, which seems a tall order given their recent batting vulnerabilities.

Mushtaq praised Taijul Islam`s performance, noting his effective bowling, despite the flat conditions. "Taijul bowled brilliantly. He showcased good variation, but they played him well. This pitch was flat on the first day and still remains slow. We need to quickly improve in these areas," he stated.

Reflecting on Bangladesh`s recent Test performances, which have declined since their historic series against Pakistan, Mushtaq underscored the importance of adhering to processes rather than merely focusing on outcomes. "It`s essential to remember the process rather than just the results. Successful teams consistently adhere to their processes," he remarked.

He also stressed the significance of game awareness in improving performance in the longer format. "I don`t believe there’s a lack of confidence; rather, it`s a lack of understanding of the Test cricket process. Batters need to know when to leave the ball and play tightly. It`s all about mindset and understanding the situation," he explained.

While discussing individual performances, Mushtaq acknowledged Taijul`s impressive five-wicket haul on a flat pitch, while noting that Mehidy Hasan Miraz could improve his consistency in bowling. "Taijul varied his pace effectively, which is why he took wickets on a flat track. Miraz needs to work on his consistency to deliver better overs," he concluded.
