| MT, NEW YORK: Bangladesh and Pakistan have agreed to further strengthen bilateral relations through expanded cooperation in trade, investment, connectivity, education, tourism and people-to-people contacts, signalling renewed momentum in ties between the two South Asian countries.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and his Pakistani counterpart Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif held a bilateral meeting on Thursday at the United Nations headquarters in New York on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
The two leaders reviewed various aspects of bilateral relations and exchanged views on regional and international developments as well as potential areas of cooperation for the welfare of the peoples of the two countries.
According to Pakistan`s Press Information Department, both leaders expressed satisfaction over the positive momentum in Bangladesh-Pakistan relations. Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan`s resolve to deepen mutually beneficial relations with Bangladesh, while Tarique Rahman expressed his government`s keen desire to further enhance bilateral ties.
The meeting also focused on practical areas where the two countries can expand cooperation. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to increasing collaboration in trade, investment, connectivity, education, tourism and people-to-people contacts.
They also agreed on the importance of maintaining regular communication and dialogue on matters of common interest and continuing coordination on regional and global issues at multilateral forums, particularly the United Nations.
Support for Bangladesh at UN
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Bangladesh on assuming the presidency of the 81st UN General Assembly and expressed Pakistan`s support for Bangladesh`s efforts to advance the objectives of the United Nations.
Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman was elected President of the 81st General Assembly on June 2, 2026. The UN says the 81st session runs from 2026 to 2027 and carries the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: a United Nations that delivers for all.”
The presidency gives Bangladesh a prominent role in guiding the General Assembly`s plenary work, consultations and negotiations during the session.
Focus on Wider Cooperation
The New York meeting comes as Dhaka and Islamabad have been showing greater interest in expanding engagement across a number of sectors.
The discussions indicate that both sides are looking beyond traditional diplomatic contacts towards economic and people-centred cooperation. Trade and investment, improved connectivity, educational exchanges and tourism were specifically identified as areas for deeper engagement.
The two sides also discussed regional and international developments of mutual interest, underscoring the importance of coordination at the United Nations and other multilateral platforms.
For Bangladesh, stronger economic and connectivity links with Pakistan could open additional avenues for trade, business and exchanges, while closer educational and tourism cooperation could create more opportunities for people from both countries.
The meeting at UN headquarters is also notable because it brings the leaders of Bangladesh and Pakistan together at a major international forum where both countries are engaging with a wide range of global issues.
Rather than focusing solely on bilateral matters, the two prime ministers also placed emphasis on regular dialogue and cooperation on issues of common interest.
The message emerging from New York was clear: Dhaka and Islamabad want to maintain contact, explore new areas of cooperation and build their relationship on mutual respect, understanding and cooperation.
The handshake between the two prime ministers may have lasted only moments, but their discussions at the UN headquarters have opened space for a broader conversation on how Bangladesh and Pakistan can expand practical cooperation and strengthen people-to-people links in the years ahead.
