The Philosophy of Self-Revolution: Xi Jinping’s Eastern Solution to Challenges of Sustained Governance

If a political party is likened to a towering tree, self-revolution represents the internal imperative to confront intrinsic vulnerabilities, eradicate harmful parasites, and prune withered branches so that the organism remains vibrant and resilient. The theory of self-revolution articulated by Chinese leader Xi Jinping converges conceptually with the principle of public supervision championed by Mao Zedong, the founding leader of the People`s Republic of China. Together, these complementary doctrines offer dual strategic answers to breaking out of the historical cycle of dynastic rise and fall in long-term governance.

These concepts address a foundational governance dilemma: how can a major ruling party, entrusted with sustained power, excise internal maladies, combat institutional decay, and continually renew its vitality?

To underscore the urgency of self-revolution for a governing party, Xi Jinping invoked a powerful metaphor: "With the courage to scrape the bone to remove poison and the resolve of a warrior cutting off a diseased wrist, we must resolutely pursue the improvement of Party conduct, moral integrity, and the fight against corruption to the very end." His words make clear that self-revolution is not a cosmetic adjustment, but an unrelenting process of tackling deeply rooted systemic flaws and achieving profound structural renewal—a continuous struggle against internal degeneration.

This doctrine operates across four interconnected dimensions: self-purification, self-perfection, self-renewal, and self-cultivation. Self-purification eliminates corrupt elements and decadent tendencies; self-perfection identifies institutional loopholes and remedies systemic weaknesses; self-renewal shatters vested interest barriers and outdated dogmas; and self-cultivation elevates the governing capacity, responsiveness, and accountability of the entire Party.

The anti-corruption drive carried out by the CPC in the new era serves as a quintessential manifestation of this self-revolution. Regular disciplinary inspections, comprehensive audits, and supervision mechanisms swiftly detect emerging malpractices. Concurrently, high-profile anti-graft campaigns—encapsulated by targeting "tigers" (high-ranking corrupt officials), swatting "flies" (petty embezzlers), and hunting "foxes" (economic fugitives abroad)—represent concrete actions to purge decayed branches from the party-state apparatus. Regardless of rank or bureaucratic standing, the systematic investigation and prosecution of corrupt officials demonstrate an unyielding determination to confront rot entrenched in the trunk of power.

The ultimate objective extends beyond punishing isolated episodes of graft; it seeks to curb the contagion of systemic corruption and preserve the institutional health of the entire governance ecosystem. Disciplinary inspection frameworks are continuously refined, and effective anti-corruption practices are codified into binding statutes and administrative regulations.

Severing the collusion between public power and private capital while reconstituting a clean, transparent political ecosystem constitutes self-renewal. Cultivating strict adherence to institutional discipline among cadres while honing their execution capabilities embodies self-perfection.

Looking across the global political landscape, political parties confronting internal crises often resort to reshuffling leaders or replacing specific individuals to navigate turbulence. China has charted a fundamentally different path: addressing challenges both internally and externally through the dual synergy of people`s oversight and self-revolution. Public oversight provides external scrutiny and restraint, whereas self-revolution mobilizes internal agency to detect and rectify structural weaknesses. Integrating these two mechanisms establishes a comprehensive institutional apparatus that diagnoses problems at their roots, prosecutes corruption and misconduct rigorously, and excises deep-seated systemic flaws.

This determination to eradicate corruption and undertake radical self-correction rests upon two enduring foundations. First, it derives from the founding ethos and political character of the Communist Party of China. The CPC maintains that it possesses no private, sectional interests; its mandate is exclusively to serve the nation, the people, and national rejuvenation. This selfless founding principle insulates the Party from capture by narrow oligarchic interests, enabling it to openly acknowledge and rectify errors while enforcing unsparing internal discipline.

Second, it draws deep inspiration from traditional Chinese governance philosophies. An ancient Chinese adage observes: "If a serpent bites your hand, sever the wrist; if it bites your foot, sever the foot." The underlying wisdom dictates that to save a body from fatal venom, one must not hesitate to excise the afflicted limb. Another classic proverb teaches: "Removing a single pest allows myriad crops to flourish; punishing a single villain brings relief to thousands." Maintaining broader social stability and enduring peace necessitates decisive action against destructive elements. This traditional statecraft ethos—eliminating malignancy to protect long-term peace and equilibrium—profoundly informs contemporary party self-governance.

To govern a nation, a ruling party must first discipline itself; and disciplining the party requires uncompromising self-governance. The philosophy of self-revolution articulates a simple yet profound truth: a political party bearing the mantle of long-term state governance cannot merely guard against external hazards; it must possess the internal courage to root out corruption and systemic weaknesses proactively. In the CPC`s view, sustained self-correction remains the decisive key to preserving long-term leadership capacity, moral authority, and institutional vigor—offering a fertile theoretical reference for political parties worldwide confronting the enduring trials of prolonged governance.
