Treating a sore throat the ayurvedic way
  Date : 03-03-2024

During this transitional season, deciding whether to carry a stole or a light wrap can be puzzling. Mornings may feel hot and humid, while nights turn chilly, often accompanied by a sore throat, cough, and a runny nose. While over-the-counter antibiotics and cough medications offer temporary relief, a sore throat can be excruciating, making swallowing painful and leaving the throat feeling dry and scratchy. For many, sore throat remedies typically involve sipping on hot ginger tea or gargling. However, Ayurveda offers a range of concoctions that can alleviate these symptoms and prevent them from worsening. Here, we explore some Ayurvedic remedies that can provide immediate relief to throat.

Yastimadhu (liquorice) with honey

Liquorice has long been hailed in Ayurveda for its ability to relieve sore throat, cough, and cold symptoms. Gargling with warm water infused with liquorice or consuming liquorice powder with honey can offer quick relief by eliminating blockages and easing coughing.

Tulsi tea

Tulsi, known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, is a potent Ayurvedic remedy for cough and cold. It helps clear mucus, relieving congestion, and boosts immunity. Adding tulsi to your tea along with a teaspoon of lemon juice can enhance its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits.

Amla juice with honey

Amla strengthens throat muscles and soothes soreness. When combined with ginger, it enhances the body’s ability to fight pathogens and boosts immunity. Consuming a tablespoon each of amla juice and ginger juice with honey can provide relief.

Triphala tea

Triphala, a blend of amla, haritaki, and bibhitaki fruits, is renowned for improving digestion and enhancing gut health. It also helps alleviate sore throat discomfort due to its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. Consuming Triphala powder with honey or as a tea can be beneficial.

Vasaka (Malabar nut) water with honey

Despite its unusual scent, Vasaka is effective in relieving chest congestion and clearing airway blockages. Its anti-inflammatory properties offer quick relief. Boiling a few Vasaka leaves in water, straining the mixture, and consuming it with honey can provide relief.

In conclusion, integrating these Ayurvedic remedies into your wellness routine can help alleviate the symptoms of sore throat, cold, and cough effectively.
