Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Asif Nazrul on Monday said there is scope to review the Public Service (Amendment) Ordinance 2025. He also mentioned that a high-level committee, formed to examine the ordinance, will hold a meeting at 4:00pm today.
The adviser made the remarks while speaking to reporters at the Secretariat, following a meeting with the United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances.
Earlier, in the face of protests by government employees, the government formed a committee—led by the law adviser—to review the ordinance and make recommendations. After the Eid holidays, the protesting employees resumed their demonstration at the Secretariat on Monday, demanding cancellation of the ordinance.
In response to a query regarding the issue, Adviser Asif Nazrul said, "Regarding the existing Public Service Ordinance, several of our advisers, including Adviser Fauzul Kabir Khan, have opined that there is indeed scope for reconsideration. I was abroad and was not directly involved in the formulation of this ordinance. When I later reviewed it, I felt that it certainly deserves reconsideration."
He added, "One thing I can assure is that the government did not enact the ordinance with any ill intent. Although there was no dishonest purpose behind it, some provisions in the ordinance might appear troubling or harassing to those it concerns. We acknowledge that such possibilities may exist within the ordinance. This ordinance primarily belongs to the Ministry of Public Administration; we only issued the gazette notification."
Asif Nazrul further said, "Today (Monday) at 4:00pm, we will hold our first meeting. I have the documents outlining the demands of the government employees. We will decide how to address and review those demands. Once finalised, InshaAllah, we will submit a report to the Advisory Council as soon as possible. Our responsibility is to provide recommendations or a report—we are not the decision-making authority."
The law adviser also urged government employees to refrain from continuing their protests until the committee submits its report.
