Trump threatens 35% tariff on Canadian exports amid trade negotiations
  Date : 11-07-2025

Online Report : US President Donald Trump has warned that a 35% tariff will be imposed on goods exported from Canada to the United States starting August 1.

The warning came in a letter sent to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, as part of a broader campaign of tariff threats targeting multiple countries.

Monday’s letter is one of over 20 similar letters Trump has recently sent to world leaders as part of his escalating trade pressure tactics.

Currently, the US and Canada are engaged in trade agreement negotiations, with a deadline set for July 21. Analysts say Trump’s latest letter casts a shadow of uncertainty over the ongoing talks.

The letter comes at a time when relations between Trump and Carney appeared to be warming. On May 6, Carney visited the White House for what was described as a cordial meeting, and the two also met at last month`s G7 summit in Canada.

Canada had recently agreed to withdraw a tax imposed on US tech companies, prompting Trump to lift a previous retaliatory trade action.

In an interview with NBC, Trump revealed that countries that have not yet received his tariff letters may soon face a universal tariff rate of 15% to 20%.

He also issued a specific warning to Brazil, threatening up to 50% tariffs unless a more favorable trade deal is reached. In response, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated that while Brazil is open to dialogue, it is also considering reciprocal measures.
