Matiur, wife sent to jail after remand in graft case
  Date : 16-09-2025

A Dhaka court has ordered former National Board of Revenue (NBR) official Matiur Rahman and his first wife, former Raipura Upazila Parishad chairperson Laila Kaniz, to jail following their remand in a corruption case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Monirul Islam passed the order on Tuesday after the pair were produced in court by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

“The investigating officer sought their detention in jail, and the court granted it,” said Aminul Islam, assistant director of the ACC’s prosecution division.

On 14 September, the court had approved a one-day remand for the couple, who were interrogated over allegations of concealing wealth information and acquiring illegal assets.

The graft case, filed on 6 January, initially named Matiur’s daughter, Farzana Rahman, for allegedly hiding information on Tk 2.45 crore and illegally amassing assets worth more than Tk 53.41 crore. Matiur was later made a co-accused in the case.

The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Matiur and Laila Kaniz from the city’s Bashundhara residential area on 14 January. They have since faced multiple remand orders in connection with separate cases.

Matiur Rahman drew public attention last year when his son purchased a sacrificial goat at an unusually high price, sparking controversy about the family’s wealth.
