Dhaka to be tuned into green, clean city: Quader

Staff Correspondent: Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Sunday said the government will make all-out strides to build Dhaka as a green and clean city.
He was addressing a board meeting of DTC joining it through a video-conferencing from his official residence on parliament premises.
The minister also asked all concerned including mayors of Dhaka south and north city corporations to make an overall report by January 15 to build Dhaka as a beautiful and modern city.
“If we can construct the Padma Bridge with domestic funds, it is possible to build Dhaka a green and clean city,” he said.
Calling upon the two mayors to take up realistic decisions to this end, Quader said the two mayors will have to take measures with the cooperation of Dhaka Metropolitan Police to stop plying of easy-bike or battery-run rickshaw in New Market, Pallabi and other areas in the city.

Besides, measures should be intensified to retrieve the footpaths from illegal occupation, he said.

He gave directives to all concerned to make a new proposal on issuing route permit after reviewing the existing rules and regulations.

The minister said stern actions should be taken against those who would not wear helmet during riding and driving motorcycles and political identity should not be considered by any means to this end.

He said actions should be taken against those who will illegally use hooters in vehicles.

Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam, Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy, Gazipur City Corporation Mayor Jahangir Alam, lawmaker Nazrul Islam Babu, Road Transport and Highways Division Secretary Md Nazrul Islam and Bridges Division Secretary Belayet Hossain, among others, joined the meeting on virtual platform.
