Former Chief Justice Mohammad Fazlul Karim passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 81. He breathed his last while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka around 4:45 am.

The Supreme Court administration confirmed his death, stating that his namaz-e-janaza will be held at the Inner Garden of the court at 1:30 pm.

Chief Justice Syed Rafat Ahmed expressed profound sorrow over the passing of former Chief Justice Fazlul Karim. He prayed for the eternal peace of the deceased`s soul and extended his condolences to the grieving family. The Supreme Court Bar Association also conveyed its condolences.

Fazlul Karim was appointed Chief Justice of the Appellate Division on February 4, 2010, and retired on September 30 of the same year.

Born on September 30, 1943, in Suchakradandi village of Patia upazila in Chattogram, he was the son of Ahmed Kabir and a descendant of the renowned scholar Abdul Karim.

Fazlul Karim completed his matriculation from Kazem Ali High School in Patia in 1958. He obtained his LLB degree from the University of Dhaka in 1964 and completed Bar-at-law in 1969.

He was enrolled as an advocate in the Chittagong Bar in 1965, then in the High Court in 1970, and in the Appellate Division in 1979.

Fazlul Karim served as the General Secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association from 1982 to 1984 and was a member of the Bangladesh Bar Council in 1992.

On November 1, 1992, he was sworn in as an Additional Judge of the High Court and became a permanent judge two years later. On May 15, 2001, he joined the Appellate Division.
