Training and academic excellence are indispensable for ensuring state-of-the-art ultrasonography services: BMU Vice-Chancellor

Moin Mahmood: The inaugural ceremony of the 38th National Conference and International Workshop of the Bangladesh Society of Ultrasonography (BSU)—held under the slogan "Ultrasound First, Ultrasound Last"—took place on Friday, September 11, at a five-star hotel in Dhaka. Professor Dr. F.M. Siddiqui, Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU), attended the event as the chief guest, while Professor Dr. Nazmul Hossain, Director General of the Directorate General of Medical Education, was present as the special guest. Professor Dr. Raihan Hossain, President of the Bangladesh Society of Ultrasonography (BSU), presided over the ceremony. A scientific session was organized following the inauguration. Additionally, an international workshop on ultrasound is being held with the active participation of the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology and the Asian Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology.

Speaking as the chief guest, BMU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. F.M. Siddiqui remarked that the importance of diagnostic medicine in the rapid and precise advancement of modern medical science is universally acknowledged today. Modern ultrasonography has become an integral component of both disease diagnosis and medical management. To ensure the availability of state-of-the-art ultrasonography services in Bangladesh, it is essential to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills while simultaneously fostering opportunities for academic learning and practical application. Experts from various countries around the world are participating in this conference alongside domestic professionals; the knowledge and experience gained from them will not only enrich local physicians, scientists, technologists, and students in the field of ultrasonography but also play a pivotal role in ensuring world-class ultrasonography services for patients in Bangladesh.

In his presidential address, the President of the Bangladesh Society of Ultrasonography (BSU), Professor Dr. ... Raihan Hossain stated that since its establishment in 1989, the Bangladesh Society of Ultrasonography has been working nationwide to expand ultrasound services. Currently, the society operates six training institutes across the country, providing essential training in ultrasonography to physicians. However, to maintain quality standards and further expand these services, it is imperative to advance educational initiatives in this field—including the introduction of advanced courses—with the necessary support from institutions like the medical university and the Government of the People`s Republic of Bangladesh.

Professor Dr. A. K. M. Fazlul Bari, Vice-President of the Bangladesh Society of Ultrasonography and Director of the National Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (NINMAS)—as well as a specialist in nuclear medicine and thyroid disorders—noted that over two hundred sonologists from across the country are participating in this national conference and international workshop. Experts from Vietnam, Pakistan, India, and Sri Lanka are also taking part. This engagement will invigorate the activities of the Bangladesh Society of Ultrasonography, enrich the knowledge and scientific understanding of physicians, and make a significant contribution to transforming healthcare services—particularly in the realm of disease diagnosis—for patients in the country.

Speakers at the inaugural ceremony included Professor Dr. M. A. Karim, former Chairman of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission; Professor Dr. Fauzia Moslem, Founding President of the Bangladesh Society of Ultrasonography and President of the Bangladesh Mahila Samity; Professor Dr. Kanu Gopal Bala, Director (Center of Education) of the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology; Professor Jasmine Ara Haque, Vice-President of the Bangladesh Society of Ultrasonography; and Professor Dr. Shankar Kumar Biswas, Secretary General, among other experts from home and abroad. Dr. Md. Abdur Rashid, Treasurer of the Bangladesh Society of Ultrasonography, delivered the vote of thanks.
