From Dhaka to Michigan: Shahnaz`s Pursuit of Cancer Research in the U.S.

“Being the first ever in my family to attend school overseas meant overcoming significant challenges, but every step of the journey was worth it,” says Shahnaz Akhtar Nishat, a dedicated researcher who is now pushing boundaries at the forefront of advanced cancer science in the United States.

Raised in a traditional middle-class household supported solely by her father, Shahnaz encountered cultural prejudices from an early age. In a culture where daughters are often undervalued, she frequently heard remarks lamenting her father’s lack of a male heir. “I carried those words with me,” Shahnaz reflects. “The expectation was that a female child shouldn’t pursue education or advanced degrees and ought to be married off before ever pursuing her dreams.”Yet, she was blessed with hardworking parents who turned a blind eye to societal judgments. Undeterred by cultural expectations, her parents ignored the critics and put their complete faith in her potential, providing full support throughout her academic and professional journey.Despite financial constraints, her parents prioritized her education above all else, ensuring she had access to every necessary resource regardless of the cost.
In 2015, Shahnaz graduated with her HSC from Holy Cross College, Dhaka, the nation’s leading institution for higher secondary education.“Sister Shikha, our principal at Holy Cross College, instilled in us the fortitude needed to succeed as women in this world. She taught us to wear a shield of resilience to let nothing dishearten or derail us as we pursue our highest ambitions,” says Shahnaz. For years, her heart was set on becoming a doctor and devoting herself to public service. The 2015 MBBS entrance exam fell victim to the worst question-leak scandal in the country’s history. For Shahnaz, who had poured her entire soul into the process, the aftermath was agonizing, a crushing blow that shattered her world and left her grieving the future she had spent a lifetime building. She struggled to accept how reckless the system had been. Even though she earned a competitive position in a dental college, it wasn’t the future she had worked for. With her ambitions set on a different horizon, she chose to pivot toward a new direction in science.
Turning the page on that setback, she earned a coveted spot at the University of Dhaka to major in chemistry. “Chemistry had a unique appeal for me compared to other sciences,” Shahnaz explains. “My interest in human biology naturally led me there. At our core, everything in the universe, including us, is made of atoms. So, when you look closely enough, life itself is chemistry.”Honored as a National Science and Technology Fellow by the Government of Bangladesh for 2022-2023, Shahnaz reflects on the vast, boundless horizon of chemistry, a discipline that serves as a bridge, opening doors for students across endless scientific and industrial landscapes.
Unstoppable in her pursuit of science, Shahnaz received fully funded doctoral offers from six renowned programs across the United States, including the Universities of Utah, South Carolina, Houston, Kentucky, and Texas Tech graduate school, before selecting Michigan State University’s world-class chemistry Ph.D. program in 2023. Beyond her research, she thrives in her role as a Graduate Teaching Assistant. “Teaching here has been an incredibly rewarding experience. The learning infrastructure here is so flexible and genuinely built to help students succeed, which I profoundly missed back home,” she notes.
At MSU, her research is mentored by Prof. Xuefei Huang, a world-renowned authority in glycobiology whose research bridges organic chemistry, chemical biology, and immunology.Under his mentorship, Shahnaz focuses on designing and synthesizing complex macromolecules such as glycoproteins and antibodies, tailored for biomedical applications. From engineering new synthetic pathways to applying these novel structures in targeted medicine, her research is driven by a singular purpose. She has dedicated her work to targeting pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest malignancies in the United States, marked by remarkably low survival rates. Her primary goal is to develop highly potent, targeted therapeutics like antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) that have never been realized before. “This is just the beginning of a long journey,” Shahnaz notes. “In a vast world of diverse research, our hope is to make a meaningful impact by bringing these complex therapeutic molecules to life.”With promising results already in hand, she is actively fine-tuning her synthetic strategies to maximize drug potency, bringing her one step closer to developing transformative biomedical solutions.
The implications of her research extend far beyond the laboratory bench; it is an aim to solve a public health crisis and a gateway into a high-stakes economic frontier. Over the last decade, targeted drug platforms, particularly Antibody-Drug Conjugates (ADCs), have exploded into a multi-billion-dollarjuggernaut transforming modern medicine. Driven by this immense horizon, Shahnaz sets her sights on the biopharmaceutical industry, determined to be at the forefront of the next therapeutic revolution.
Shahnaz’s commitment to service extends well beyond her bench work. As an active member in the chemistry graduate student organization at Michigan State University, she dedicates her time to addressing student needs and building a stronger academic community. “I joined student leadership because I am living the same experience,” Shahnaz notes. “As an international student, I understand our shared struggles, and I wanted to use my voice to make sure every student feels seen, heard, and represented.”
More than 12,000 kilometers across the ocean, a brilliant mind is carving out her legacy. What began years ago as the heartbreak of a lost medical dream has transformed itself into a powerful mission in global health. “Years ago, when I lost my dream of practicing medicine, I never imagined I would find my way back to public health. My greatest test wasn’t proving what I could do to myself, but proving my worth to a society that so often diminishes women,” she reflects. Her path has been paved with resilience, but a vast journey still stretches ahead. Unbroken and undeterred, she continues to craft her dreams, turning every past setback into fuel for the triumphs yet to come.
