G7 summit ends with limited consensus as Trump exit, global crises overshadow talks

The Group of Seven summit concluded Tuesday with few major breakthroughs as leaders grappled with escalating global crises—including the Israel-Iran conflict and Russia’s war in Ukraine—while trying to project unity in the absence of US President Donald Trump, who left the summit early amid intensifying Middle East tensions.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney hosted the gathering in Kananaskis, joined by leaders from the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and NATO’s incoming chief Mark Rutte. Yet the summit ended without a joint statement on Ukraine—largely due to U.S. resistance, according to a senior Canadian official, although the claim was later walked back.

Despite Trump’s early departure, the remaining six leaders held extended discussions with Zelenskyy, who emphasized Ukraine’s readiness for peace talks but stressed the need for international pressure on Russia. While the U.S. stayed out of new sanctions, Carney announced fresh Canadian measures and reaffirmed support for Ukraine’s sovereignty.

On Iran, the summit took a cautious tone. French President Emmanuel Macron warned against pushing for regime change, saying such a move would spark regional chaos. Still, before leaving, Trump joined in a brief joint statement asserting that Iran “can never have a nuclear weapon” and calling for de-escalation in Gaza and the broader Middle East.

The G7 did find some agreement on issues like regulating AI and countering non-market economic practices, particularly concerning access to critical minerals. However, ongoing trade tensions loomed large. Trump’s tariffs on steel, aluminum, autos, and general imports have strained relations, with more hikes potentially coming in July.

In a rare moment of cooperation, Trump and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer signed a trade framework agreement. The exchange briefly turned awkward when Trump dropped the document and Starmer picked it up, later explaining his unusual move as a security precaution.

Ultimately, the summit highlighted the difficulty of sustaining unity amid diverging priorities. While Carney praised the gathering’s outcomes and downplayed Trump’s exit, the summit underscored a world facing simultaneous geopolitical and economic flashpoints—and a G7 increasingly challenged to manage them.
