Mob justice in any form unacceptable: Jahangir

Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said that the manner in which mob justice was carried out during the detention of former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Nurul Huda is unacceptable. He added that if any law enforcement officials were involved in the incident despite being present at the scene, legal action will be taken against them following an investigation.

He made these remarks while speaking to journalists on Monday (June 23) after visiting the Horticulture Centre at Mouchak in Kaliakair, Gazipur.

The Home Affairs Adviser clarified that the reports published the previous day regarding the arrest of former CEC Habibul Awal were incorrect. “He has not been arrested. Rather, former CEC Nurul Huda was detained from Uttara. The manner in which mob justice was carried out during his detention is not acceptable,” he said.

The adviser also stated that a new law is being formulated to protect agricultural land from illegal occupation. Alongside cultivating foreign fruits, the production of local fruits must be increased to prevent their extinction, he added.

During the visit, Gazipur Deputy Commissioner Nafisa Arefin, Superintendent of Police Dr Chowdhury Javer Sadek, Horticulture Centre’s Enamul Haque, Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension Md Rafiqul Islam Khan, Kaliakair Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Kawsar Ahmed, and other senior officials from the police and Ministry of Agriculture were present.

The adviser toured various sections of the Horticulture Centre, spoke with officials and staff, and gave guidance. He then departed for Tangail, where he is scheduled to visit the Police Training Centre (PTC) and hold meetings with law enforcement and officials from various departments at the Deputy Commissioner’s office.
