GM Quader, 17 others sued over attacking on Gono Odhikar procession

The Bangladesh Chhatra Odhikar Parishad, student wing of Gono Odhikar Parishad, has filed a complaint against Jatiya Party (JaPa) Chairman GM Quader, General Secretary Shameem Haider Patwary, and 16 other leaders in connection with an alleged attack on a procession in Dhaka last month.

The complaint, submitted to Ramna Police Station on Tuesday by Chhatra Odhikar’s organising secretary Akteruzzaman Somrat Mazi, also accuses 100–150 unnamed individuals.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Ramna Division Deputy Commissioner Masud Alam confirmed the filing.

According to the complaint, the incident occurred on August 29th after a rally led by Gono Odhikar President Nurul Haque Nur in front of Al-Razi Complex. The rally had demanded the arrest of leaders from both the JaPa and Awami League allegedly linked to the “fallen fascist regime.”

As the procession moved from Paltan intersection toward Nightingale intersection near the JaPa office, it was allegedly attacked by 100–150 armed activists chanting “Joy Bangla” slogans. The attack left around 20–30 Gono Odhikar activists, including the plaintiff, injured.

That night, clashes broke out in Kakrail between Nur’s supporters and JaPa activists, prompting police and army personnel to use batons to restore order. Nur was among those injured.

The following day, protesters vandalised and set fire to the Jatiya Party’s Kakrail office. Police responded with sound grenades, water cannons, and baton charges to disperse the crowd.

The Jatiya Party later accused Gono Odhikar activists of storming and torching its office.

The Gono Odhikar Parishad rejected the allegation, insisting its members had already left the area after their demonstration.
