Fakhrul pledges equal rights, cultural recognition for ethnic communities

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called on members of all ethnic groups to stand proud as Bangladeshi citizens, assuring that a BNP government would take sincere steps to resolve their issues.

Speaking at the Dhaka Wangala Festival 2025—the Garo community’s post-harvest celebration—held at Banani Bidyaniketan School and College on Friday, Fakhrul said, “If the BNP comes to power, we will address your problems with utmost seriousness.”

He referred to BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman’s 31-point reform agenda, which envisions building a “rainbow nation” where all communities can contribute equally.

Fakhrul emphasized improving the socioeconomic conditions of small ethnic groups while preserving their cultural heritage. “Our responsibility is to integrate all communities into the mainstream, improve their economic condition, and protect their distinct traditions,” he said.

The BNP leader also noted that late President Ziaur Rahman’s idea of Bangladeshi nationalism recognized all communities living in the country, not just Bengalis.

Fakhrul hinted at establishing a separate cultural academy in Dhaka for ethnic minorities and ensuring state support for celebrations like the Wangala Festival if his party assumes power.

Other speakers at the event included Bangladesh Jatiya Party Chairman Andaleeve Rahman Partho, BNP Joint Secretary General Syed Emran Saleh Prince, and Presidency University Vice Chancellor Prof. AHM Faruk.
