  Barapukuria power plant resumes generation

Production at the first unit of the Barapukuria coal-fired thermal power plant at Parbatipur upazila of Dinajpur, has resumed after a two-day technical glitch on Friday.

According to Chief Engineer Abu Bakkar Siddique the 125 MW capacity unit officially began supplying 55 to 60 MW of electricity to the national grid at 8:30 PM.

The facility was forced offline on the night of April 22 due to mechanical faults caused by stones mixed with the coal supply.

Following repairs by engineers, the unit was successfully restored, currently requiring approximately 700 metric tons of coal daily to operate.

While the plant’s 525 MW capacity is shared across multiple units, the second unit has remained inactive since November 2020.

Chief Engineer Abu Bakkar Siddique expect that the restoration of the first unit will significantly stabilize the power supply and reduce frequent load-shedding across eight districts in the northern region.
