Govt to change police uniform; trousers to be khaki, says minister

The government has decided to change the police uniform, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said, adding that the previous shirt will be retained while the trousers will be khaki.

He made the remarks to journalists on Monday (May 4) at the Secretariat after the first meeting of the National Committee on the Coordination, Management, and Law and Order related to forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals (Rohingya).

Responding to a question about the progress of the uniform change, the adviser said there had been dissatisfaction with the existing uniform both across the country and within the police force. “It was not widely accepted and, in proper terms, it was not suitable,” he said.

He added that the government had considered introducing a more traditional uniform. “We have retained the previous shirt—the upper part that was earlier used both in metropolitan areas and across the country. However, for the lower part, including trousers or pajamas, we have decided on a khaki colour,” he said.

He noted that after detailed discussions with the police, a more acceptable uniform had been finalised. “It will take some time before they can start wearing it, as there are issues related to preparation, fabric production, and tailoring. It has not yet been officially announced, but the decision has been made. Today, we are announcing it,” he added.

When asked about an incident in which a journalist was reportedly prevented from travelling abroad the previous day, he said, “Let me look into the matter.”
