West Bengal polls won`t impact Bangladesh- Dr. Shafiqul Islam Masud

Patuakhali Cortrespondent: Member of Parliament for Patuakhali-2 (Bauphal), Dr. Shafiqul Islam Masud, has stated that the ongoing election in India’s West Bengal will have no impact on Bangladesh, emphasizing national sovereignty and communal harmony.

“The West Bengal election is an internal matter of a neighboring country. While some discussions are taking place, we have no concerns. It will not affect the communal harmony of Bangladesh,” Dr. Masud said while addressing an exchange meeting with Hindu community leaders in Bauphal on Tuesday evening.

He reaffirmed Bangladesh’s tradition of coexistence, saying, “People of all religions have lived together in this country, are living, and will continue to do so.” He added that even if isolated incidents occur in West Bengal surrounding election outcomes, they would not influence Bangladesh.

Dr. Masud underscored the importance of unity and self-determination. “We will determine our own path to well-being. This state is ours, and this soil is ours. If we remain firm, no external force can interfere,” he said. He also stressed the importance of aligning actions with values, describing it as both a moral and spiritual responsibility.

Calling for collective efforts, the MP urged cooperation from all communities to build Bauphal into a model, humane area regardless of political affiliation, religion, caste, or ethnicity.

Addressing law and order issues, Dr. Masud highlighted progress in combating drug abuse. “While drugs have not been fully eliminated, a major breakthrough has been achieved—we have stopped the practice of releasing drug dealers under political pressure,” he said. He described drugs as a “cancer-like epidemic” and noted improved cooperation between the public and law enforcement since February 12.

He further said that authorities are now able to act more effectively without interference. “Previously, there was pressure even before arrests were made. That situation no longer exists,” he added, expressing optimism that drug control efforts would continue to strengthen.

On the issue of theft, Dr. Masud said law enforcement agencies are actively working to dismantle organized theft syndicates. “You are already seeing results in catching thieves. Our next step is to break these networks,” he said.

He acknowledged that legal complexities remain in fully addressing crime but assured that these issues would be raised in the National Parliament. “Crime cannot be eradicated overnight, but it will not be tolerated. We will take all necessary steps gradually,” he said.

The meeting was chaired by Bauphal Upazila Ameer Maulana Rafiqul Islam and attended by local Hindu community leaders, including Jiban Krishna Saha, President of Bauphal Kalibari Temple, and General Secretary Adhir Chandra Das. More than 50 community representatives were present at the event.
