Govt to introduce “Probashi Card” for expatriates: Minister

Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury has said that the government is set to introduce a “Probashi Card” aimed at improving services, benefits, and recognition for Bangladeshi expatriates.

He made the announcement while addressing a programme title “Globalising Sylhet” held at a hotel and resort in Sylhet on Saturday.

The minister said the proposed card will streamline access to government services for expatriates and ensure smoother delivery of facilities for remittance earners.

He added that the initiative aims to improve the dignity of expatriate workers and strengthen state support mechanisms for those contributing significantly to the national economy. The card will be launched soon, he said.

Ariful also announced plans for special housing and investment support schemes for expatriates, saying the government is considering apartment-based housing projects instead of traditional land-based allocations due to limited land availability.

He noted that Sylhet may be selected as the starting point for the initiative, given its strong connection with overseas workers. The proposed projects will include security, commercial facilities, and civic services exclusively for expatriates.

The proposal has already been discussed with the Prime Minister, he added.

The minister said many expatriates face bureaucratic delays and difficulties when investing in the country. To address this, a dedicated government cell has been formed to expedite approvals and reduce procedural complications.

He assured that expatriate investments will be made more secure and efficient under the new framework.

A dedicated lounge for expatriates is under construction at Osmani International Airport, with the tender process already completed, he said.

A medical unit staffed with doctors and nurses is also being set up at the airport immigration area to provide emergency healthcare services. In addition, ambulances will be stationed at the airport to ensure rapid response for critically ill passengers.

He further said the government has already introduced a system for free repatriation of the bodies of deceased expatriates, ensuring their transportation to their respective hometowns.

Among others, Sylhet City Corporation Administrator Abdul Kayyum Chowdhury and Police Commissioner Abdul Quddus Chowdhury attended the event.
