China Rejects South China Sea Arbitration Ruling, Calls for Dialogue-Based Resolution

International: Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning responded to questions from journalists at a regular press conference on Friday.

During the briefing, a reporter asked about the so-called “South China Sea arbitration award.” In response, Mao Ning said China has repeatedly made its position clear that the so-called award is illegal, invalid and has no binding legal effect.

“China does not accept or recognize this award, and will not accept any claims or actions based on it,” Mao said.

She further stated that the formulation of the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea is an important step toward implementing the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea and represents a significant consensus reached between China and ASEAN countries.

Mao Ning said China has always been committed to advancing consultations with ASEAN members and working toward the early conclusion of the Code of Conduct in order to safeguard peace and stability in the South China Sea.

She emphasized that the so-called arbitration award has no connection with the Code of Conduct.

“Therefore, the Philippines should not use this so-called award as a means to obstruct the conclusion of the Code of Conduct,” Mao said.
