China to Expand Use of AI Large Models in Intellectual Property Sector

International: China will promote the coordinated development of intellectual property (IP) protection and artificial intelligence (AI), the country`s National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) said.

Speaking at a press conference in Beijing on Wednesday, CNIPA Deputy Head Rui Wenbiao said that by the end of June, legally valid invention patents in emerging information technology fields, including artificial intelligence, the internet, cloud computing and big data, accounted for 16.5 percent of China`s total valid invention patents.

"We will conduct in-depth theoretical and practical research on issues including the patent eligibility of AI-generated works, qualified patent applicants, and the identification of the scope of patent protection," Rui said.

He noted that the current classification list of goods and services eligible for trademark and patent applications already includes more than 900 categories related to new industries and business models involving artificial intelligence and big data.

The list will be regularly updated, Rui said, adding that China will further expand the application and use of AI-based large language models in the intellectual property sector.
