From Paradise to Pain: How 27 October Changed Kashmir

Once celebrated as paradise on earth, Kashmir has spent generations living in the shadow of a day that changed its fate.

Shazia Ashraf: There was a time when Kashmir was described as paradise on earth. Its mountains rose above clear waters, gardens filled the valleys with colour, and its beauty drew poets, travellers and dreamers from across the world. But on 27 October 1947, the story of this paradise entered a darker chapter.

The arrival of Indian troops in Srinagar that day changed more than the political history of Kashmir. It marked the beginning of a conflict whose consequences would reach into homes, families and generations. A region once celebrated for its beauty increasingly became associated with uncertainty, conflict and loss.

The transformation was gradual, but its human cost was immense. The sounds of birdsong and flowing rivers were joined by the sounds of gunfire. Streets once filled with ordinary life became places of fear, with checkpoints and heightened security. Families began living with the possibility of arrest, disappearance or death. Children grew up learning words that should never have been part of childhood: curfew, crackdown, detention and disappearance.

Paradise did not disappear overnight. It was gradually overshadowed by decades of conflict.

Behind every statistic is a home that once echoed with laughter. Behind every disappearance is a family waiting for answers. Behind every grave is a future that was never lived. The tragedy of Kashmir, therefore, is not only about a disputed territory; it is also about what prolonged conflict has done to its people and to a place once celebrated for its peace and beauty.

Yet Kashmir’s story is not solely one of destruction. Its people have continued to preserve their culture, remember their history and hold on to their hopes. The valleys still bloom in spring. The rivers still flow. The mountains still stand. But for Kashmiris, beauty now exists alongside memories that cannot be erased. That is why 27 October carries such profound significance.

The day is remembered by Kashmiris as a turning point in the region’s history and as a symbol of the conflict that has shaped their lives. Seventy-nine years later, the question is not only what happened to Kashmir’s political future, but also what happened to the paradise that generations once knew.

A land can retain its mountains, rivers and gardens and still lose something far more precious.

The paradise remained beautiful. It was the lives within it that changed.
