Chairman accused with wife for beating a woman to asking widow`s allowance card at Jamalpur
  Date : 26-04-2024

Abu Sayem Md Saadat-Ul-Karim: Jamalpur Sadar Upazila Sharifpur Union Parishad Chairman couple has been accused of beating an elderly woman for a widow`s allowance card.

The incident took place at the house of Sadar Upazila Sharifpur Union Chairman Mohammad Rafiqul Islam Alam on Tuesday morning. The victim was identified as Hanufa Bewa of Rangamati village in Sharifpur union. Her husband`s name is Akkas Ali Sheikh. Her husband died two years ago. He himself works in someone else`s house. The woman lodged a written complaint with the Jamalpur Sadar Police Station on Tuesday, August 11, 2020 at around 5 pm.

According to the complaint, Hanufa Bewa paid Tk 5,000 to Sharifpur Union Parishad chairman Mohammad Rafiqul Islam Alam for a widow`s card seven months ago.

But the chairman did not even give the card with the money. Mohammad Rafiqul Islam Alam and his wife beat the woman for going home for the card. The woman lodged a written complaint with the police with the help of local people.

Hanufa Bewa, who confessed to the torture, said the chairman wanted Taka 5,000 for the card. I went to the chairman`s house with 5,000 rupees in interest. After that, the widow did not get the allowance card for 6 months. The chairman and his wife beat me whenever I asked for a card. Poor people. If you don`t give me the card, get my money back. 5 thousand rupees is a lot for us. I want justice for this. I am coming to the police station to seek justice. "My father died two years ago," said Alif Sheikh, Hanufa Bewar`s only son. My mother works in that house and somehow runs the family. The widow paid Taka 5,000 to the chairman a year ago for the allowance card. She hasn`t given my mother`s card yet. Today, when the mother went to his house for the card, the chairman and his wife beat him and kicked him out of the house. I want the trial of Chairman Alam who beat my mother.

Sharifpur Union Parishad Chairman Rafiqul Islam Alam said, "Neither I nor my wife have done such an incident." When the widow went to my house and talked about her card, I told her that the list of widow allowance cards was in the council. I can see the list and tell you if you have a name. Then my wife understood him and sent him home.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of Jamalpur Sadar Police Station Mohammad Salemuzzaman said, "I have received a written complaint about the beating of an old woman. The matter will be investigated and legal action will be taken."
