Japan to provide 2,294 m Japanese Yen to Bangladesh; deals signed

The Government of Japan will provide an amount of 2,294 million Japanese Yen (equivalent to approximately Taka 172.3162 crore or $15.31 million) for the project titled ‘Project for the Improvement of Fish Landing Center of Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation in Cox’s Bazar District’.

The project will be implemented by Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC) under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.

In this regard, Grant Agreement and Exchange of Notes were signed today between Bangladesh and Japan. Md. Shahriar Kader Siddiky, Secretary, Economic Relations Division (ERD), signed the Exchange of Notes and Grant Agreement on behalf of Bangladesh. IWAMA Kiminori, Ambassador of Japan in Bangladesh signed the ‘Exchange of Notes’ and ICHIGUCHI Tomohide, Chief Representative, JICA Bangladesh Office, signed the ‘Grant Agreement’ on behalf of Japan, said an ERD press release.

The grant provided by Japan will be utilized to improve the efficiency of landing and handling of netted fish. Moreover, the productivity of the fish will be enhanced and the distribution system will be improved by upgrading the infrastructures and fishing equipments of BFDC’s fish landing center in Cox’s Bazar.

The release said Japan is the single largest bilateral development partner of Bangladesh. Since the independence, Japan has committed $32.36 billion. Japan has contributed significantly to the overall development of the country.

In addition to soft loans, Japan is also providing significant amounts of Grant and Technical Assistance for different projects, including support to human resource development, socio-economic development and environmental protection. BSS
