The flood situation in Laxmipur has worsened due to continuous rainfall and rising water levels in river, leaving thousands stranded.

Water levels in surrounding rivers of the district increased due to onrush of water from Noakhali district and persistent rainfall since Saturday evening, deteriorating the overall flood situation in Chandraganj, Hajipara, Charshahi, Dighli, Uttar Jaipur, Bangakhan, Mandari, Dattapara, Tewariganj, Shakchar and Charruhita unions under Sadar upazila of the district.

Deputy Commissioner Suraiya Jahan said that around 25,000 people have sought refuge in various shelters, with many more heading to safe zones.

The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has provided Tk 10 lakh, 500 tonnes of rice, Tk 5 lakh for baby food, and Tk 5 lakh for animal feed, said Jahan.

"The assistance and cash have been equally distributed among the five upazila nirbahi officers in the district," the DC added.
