International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam has accused former ICT State Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak of shutting down internet services to prevent information about alleged genocide from reaching the public and the international community.

According to the Chief Prosecutor, Palak was aware of the plans for the killings, which were carried out in collaboration with the former Prime Minister.

"During July and August, he intentionally disconnected Bangladesh from the world by suspending internet services to hide the atrocities," Tajul Islam stated during a press briefing at the ICT on Thursday (December 12).

The ICT has ordered Palak to be interrogated at a safe home on December 18 to uncover further details about his alleged role in planning and implementing the genocide. Palak, currently in prison following his arrest on November 18 in connection with the allegations, is accused of crimes against humanity during the anti-discrimination student movement.

The order was issued by a three-member tribunal led by Justice Golam Mortuza, along with Justice Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.

Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam petitioned the court for permission to interrogate Palak, arguing that as a cabinet member at the time, Palak had direct involvement in executing the alleged plans. "He was responsible for implementing crimes against humanity targeting students and the general public," Islam said.

The tribunal granted the petition, allowing a one-day interrogation on December 18.

Palak`s arrest followed allegations of genocide during the student-led anti-discrimination movement. On November 18, the ICT issued a detention order for the former state minister and set December 17 as the date for submitting a progress report on the case.

Additional Chief Prosecutor Mizanul Islam and Prosecutor BM Sultan Mahmud were also present during Thursday`s proceedings.

The interrogation is expected to shed light on Palak`s involvement in the alleged crimes, particularly his reported collaboration with the former Prime Minister in orchestrating the atrocities.
