Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Mohammad Abdul Momen said that, despite Tulip Siddiq, a UK Labour Party MP and former city minister, identifying as British, her documents suggest she is Bangladeshi.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, June 16, 2025, Momen remarked, "There are three ongoing cases against Tulip Siddique, with another under investigation. Regardless of her claims of British citizenship, our documents indicate she is Bangladeshi. She seems to switch between identities for convenience, and it’s up to the media to judge if this is appropriate."
Momen questioned why Tulip resigned as UK City Minister if she is innocent, adding, "If she claims innocence, why did her lawyer contact the ACC? Why did she step down from her ministerial role?"
He emphasised that the ACC considers her a Bangladeshi citizen and will take action accordingly.
The ACC is investigating allegations against Tulip, niece of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted in a student-led movement.
Allegations include irregularities in Rajuk’s plot allotment and a Gulshan flat, as well as a sudden increase in her declared gold holdings from 10 to 30 bhori in her income tax return, despite no price change.
Momen confirmed that summonses have been sent to the correct address, saying, "Under Bangladeshi law, Tulip Siddiq will face court proceedings. We have informed her lawyer accordingly."
The ACC filed a case against her on April 15, 2025, for illegally arranging a plot transfer in Gulshan and accepting a flat from Eastern Housing Limited as a bribe.
Siddique was summoned by the ACC on May 14 and again on June 15, 2025, though she claims not to have received these notices. Media reports suggest individuals linked to Sheikh Hasina’s government in London used a flat associated with Tulip.
Tulip resigned as UK City Minister (Economic Secretary to the Treasury) in January 2025 amid these allegations.
She was re-elected as MP for Hampstead and Highgate in the UK general election and appointed Labour Party Finance Minister in July 2024.
