The central office of the Jatiya Party came under attack and was vandalised on Saturday evening, allegedly by leaders and activists of several groups, including the Gono Odhikar Parishad.
Police responded with tear gas and water cannon to bring the situation under control.
The incident occurred at around 6:30 pm on Saturday, August 30. Just 15 minutes earlier, activists of the People’s Rights Council had marched to the Jatiya Party office in a protest procession.
The demonstration was organised in response to an earlier assault on Nurul Haque Nur, president of the People’s Rights Council and former vice-president of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU). Following the procession, clashes broke out and bricks were reportedly hurled at police officers.
Nurul Haque Nur, who sustained injuries during an earlier confrontation with law enforcement in Kakrail, Dhaka, was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) at Dhaka Medical College Hospital in the early hours of Friday, 29 August. He was transferred to the ICU shortly after 12:30 am.
