Padma Bridge to generate over 6 MW of solar power
  Date : 15-09-2025

The Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BBA) signed a Tk 23.58 crore agreement to generate a total of 6,033 kilowatt-peak (kWp) of electricity through solar power from the service areas of Padma Bridge.

BBA signed the agreement with Omera Renewable Energy Limited this week to implement the project within six months.

Chief Engineer of BBA Kazi Md Ferdous and Omera CEO, Masudur Rahman, formalised the deal, following directives from Adviser to the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan.

A recent feasibility study conducted by the Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) estimated that Service Area-1 could produce 1,966 kWp, Service Area-2 about 2,948 kWp, and Service Area-3 roughly 1,119 kWp, amounting to a combined capacity of 6,033 kWp. The solar systems are expected to be fully operational by 14 March 2026.

The project aligns with Bangladesh’s Renewable Energy Policy 2025, which aims to source 20 percent of total power demand from renewables by 2030 and 30 percent by 2040. The government has also launched the National Rooftop Solar Programme to expand renewable energy adoption and strengthen energy security.

The BBA noted that electricity generated from the solar panels will be managed via a net metering system, helping reduce overall energy costs while promoting sustainable infrastructure development.
