Police have arrested a man for allegedly killing his wife at Shyamlipara area of Ullapara municipality in Sirajganj district.

The victim was identified as Amrita Rani Halder, 35, while the arrestee is her husband, Jibon Barman, 40.

Confirming the information, Ullapara Model Police Station officer-in-charge Rakibul Hasan said, “Amrita had long been subjected to mental and physical abuse by her drug-addicted husband and his family members.”

On Tuesday afternoon, she was allegedly strangled to death at her husband’s residence following a family dispute.

Later, police recovered the body and sent it to Shaheed M. Monsur Ali Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

That night, the victim’s father filed a case with Ullapara Model Police Station, naming her husband, mother-in-law and brother-in-law as accused.

Acting on the case, police conducted a drive in the area and arrested Jibon Barman the same night.

The OC said, “Police have already begun investigating the case and efforts are underway to arrest the remaining accused.”
