Referendum on election day could lead to genocide: Jamaat Ameer
  Date : 22-11-2025

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has warned that holding a referendum on election day could lead to severe national consequences, including what he described as a "risk of genocide."

Speaking to journalists at Chawkbazar Parade Ground on Saturday afternoon, Dr. Shafiqur said, “I do not want a referendum on election day. If such a vote is held alongside the general election, there is a risk of genocide.” He did not specify who or what would be at risk, nor provide a detailed explanation, but framed the comment as a warning against deepening political polarization.

He emphasized that the upcoming general election, expected in early 2026, must be held under fair conditions. “This election has to take place. If it doesn’t, the country will face a crisis. We will not allow any crisis to develop,” he said after arriving in Chattogram by helicopter.

Dr. Shafiqur claimed there is currently no level playing field for political parties. “We must create one. The people deserve a free and fair election where all voices are heard.”

Reiterating his party’s longstanding demand, he called for the introduction of a proportional representation (PR) system in national elections. “The PR system will serve the people, not just one party. Even if we come to power, I promise, InshaAllah, we will implement it.”

He clarified that Jamaat is not making unrealistic demands at this time. “I am not speaking for Jamaat’s victory. I am speaking for the people’s victory.”

Reflecting on 54 years of independence, Dr. Shafiqur expressed concern over stalled progress despite Bangladesh’s vast natural and human resources. “Chattogram and Bangladesh as a whole are lands of wealth. But who has benefited? A few have looted the nation’s riches. The common people remain deprived.”

He cited the collapse of the education system, lack of industrial growth, and underperformance in fisheries and livestock production as signs of failed leadership. “We lack prudent, sincere, patriotic, and honest leaders. Without them, every opportunity is lost.”

“We must not let this moment pass like those before. This chance belongs to the entire nation, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, all citizens equally,” he said.

“Our war is against corruption,” he declared. “We will not bow to anyone. We will not hand over the politics of this country to any family or party. The real owners are the people, and we want to return their rights to them.”

He added that eradicating corruption would open the path to development, with education reform as a top priority. “We must rebuild our broken education system, modern, moral, and humane. Our goal is not to produce anti-social elites, but compassionate, responsible citizens.”

Responding to questions about political rivalries, he said, “We have too many positive agendas to focus on. We don’t have time to provoke anyone or respond to provocations.”
