Application of social intelligence to prevent conflict
8, June, 2021, 8:13:16:PM

Despite the state`s efforts to prevent conflict and untimely deaths, the use of social intelligence at the individual level is important in resolving conflicts. Recently, my university classmate Sohail Rana was brutally murdered by miscreants over a land dispute. Sohail Rana was an assistant teacher in primary school in Rajshahi. He is survived by his elderly parents, wife and two young children. This is a minor incident in the current volume of conflict in our society. However, such incidents are happening in different parts of our country, in that sense, it is a serious issue.

In our evolving society, even though there are state laws and policies in the system of distribution of property and transfer of ownership, it is not possible to reduce the divisions and conflicts related to the distribution of wealth due to lack of social intelligence of the individual. The idea and reality of bringing property under one`s control by force of muscles or force of money prevails in our society. But the idea that it is not eternal has not been properly considered today and there is room for more in-depth analysis. Traditionally, in our society, the process of distribution of family wealth was also resolved through the concerted efforts of family leaders and local leaders. But with the increasing political activism and exercise of power at the local level from the center of the state, the local settlement system is often useless or seemingly zero. The increase in the exercise of local power empowers local people as well as induces the abuse of power. As a result, conflicts and unexpected deaths are on the rise. In this context, I feel the need to institutionalize and spread the idea of developing social intelligence.

If we divide the concept of social intelligence in two ways, it is related to (a) the assumption and acceptance of various mental decisions. (B) Again, it is a part of skill which indicates how the individual has to participate in different social events and contexts. This second part of the skill helps the person to solve his social problems, including the ability to understand the feelings, thoughts and behaviors of others in different social situations. In the context of our society, I think it is very important that the underlying aspects of social intelligence be present in us when it comes to individual or group interaction.

Psychologist Edward Thorndike perceived social insights and spoke of three types of intelligence such as abstract, mechanical and social. He goes on to define social intelligence as the ability to manage one person`s communication with another; It is the ability to understand each other and the behavioral skills of others in social situations. Thorndike (1920) noted that "a lack of social intelligence can lead to failure as the best mechanic foreman in a factory." It ensures the need for people to feel love, loyalty and partnership and to manage the direction and activities of their lives. In 1943, the American psychologist Abraham Harold Maslow presented this idea in his Theory of Human Needs Pyramid, where he explained that people in general need devotion, loyalty and love for themselves. This need will give him sensitive support and confidence. On the other hand, when people do not meet their needs efficiently, they become more anxious, frustrated and socially isolated. This anxiety and frustration can lead to heinous acts like murder. We feel a strong need to develop social intelligence to prevent conflict and untimely death.

Many experts and researchers believe that some social elements contribute to the development of social intelligence. They are-

1. Socialization: The socialization of human beings starts from the family. A good socialization is the best social contribution and a method of teaching social values by which a person is made aware of his sense of responsibility towards himself and others. These roles lead the person towards acceptable social behavior.

2. Social interaction: Social interaction can be known as a way of acquiring values, customs, and attitudes, and in this way individuals and groups learn patterns of organized behavior in social relationships. As a result, a person`s behavior in any given situation is determined by social values and conventional customs.

3. Flexibility of dealing: The most needed thing in our society now is behavioral flexibility in communication, exchange or transaction. If a person has the qualities of flexible behavior, he can make a decision in dealing with any social situation by judging by social obligations and values by verifying or thinking.

4. Acceptability: A person`s attitude towards others helps to build the foundation of his or her social relationships, but also determines a person`s level of social status and acceptance by understanding and loving others, empathizing with others and being interested in their comfort and well-being.

It will not be possible to bring Sohail Rana back. We can`t even say what will happen to the children he left behind. I humbly request the state to take necessary steps to prevent this unfortunate incident from happening again. At the same time, I strongly urge parents and guardians to play an effective role in the development of social intelligence at the family level. All in all we want to see socially intelligent and skilled people. Only then the social relations between people will be better and conflicts in society will be reduced.
