Bangladesh trail by 101 runs after day 2

Bangladesh found themselves in a challenging position after day two of the first Test against South Africa in Mirpur, trailing by 101 runs with eight wickets in hand.

South Africa`s first innings total of 308, powered by a century from wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne, left Bangladesh reeling after they were bowled out for just 106 in their first innings.

Kagiso Rabada`s two quick strikes after tea further compounded Bangladesh`s troubles as they ended the day at 19-2, needing 183 runs to avoid an innings defeat. Rabada dismissed Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque in successive deliveries, leaving Bangladesh in a precarious position.

Earlier in the day, South Africa resumed at 140-6 and were propelled by Verreynne’s 114, a gritty innings that included eight boundaries and two sixes. He built crucial partnerships, first with Wiaan Mulder, who contributed 54, and then with Dane Piedt, who added 32. Their efforts helped South Africa post a commanding lead of 202.

Hasan Mahmud and Mehidy Hasan Miraz were the pick of Bangladesh`s bowlers, with Hasan taking 3-66 and Mehidy claiming 2-63. Hasan’s reverse-swinging delivery to bowl Keshav Maharaj and Mehidy’s stumping of Verreynne were bright spots in an otherwise tough day for Bangladesh.

Taijul Islam also reached a milestone, surpassing 200 Test wickets with his 5-122, becoming only the second Bangladeshi to achieve the feat after Shakib Al Hasan.

With two days remaining, Bangladesh face a steep uphill battle to avoid defeat, while South Africa remain firmly in control.

The second Test is scheduled to begin in Chattogram on October 29
