Ship contained 18,500 bags of cement sinks in Meghna

MA Mannan, Bhola: A cargo ship sank in the Meghna River near Daulatkhan Upazila in Bhola. The ship named MV Soumi Islam 1 sank on the spot after being hit by a ship named MV Titu 54.
The incident took place on October 10 at 12:00 noon in the middle of the Meghna River, 4 kilometers away from the fish ghat at the Meghna side of Daulatkhan.
Officer-in-Charge of Daulatkhan Police Station, OC Zillur Rahman, said that the master of the sunken Soumi launch, Aminul Islam, filed a GD with Daulatkhan Police Station on the day of the incident, GD number 392.
According to information, the damaged ship contained a total of 18,500 bags of Shah Cement. Its market value is 70 lakh 56 thousand. In addition, the owner claimed that the damage to the ship was about 50 lakh taka.
The ship was heading from Shah Cement Factory in Narayanganj to Chittagong.
On the way, the MV Titu 54 hit the cargo ship MV Soumi Islam 1 at the lower part and the ship sank in the river on the spot. However, there were no casualties.
When asked about the incident, the master of the launch, Aminul Islam, said that the MV Titu 54 hit the ship from the side. This caused a hole of about five to six feet in the lower part of our ship. Water entered through that hole and the entire ship, including 18,500 bags of cement on the ship, sank in the river.
Master Aminul Islam also said, when the Titu 54 ship was about to come towards us, we tried to contact the ship. But no sound was received from the opposite side. Our ship is submerged in water. Later, with the help of local fishermen, we were able to bring it closer to the river bank. A general diary has been filed at the local Police Station in this incident.
