Law Ministry spokesperson Dr Md Rezaul Karim announced on Monday that the government has decided to conduct trials of cases related to the killings during the July Uprising at Speedy Trial Tribunals, excluding those already under the jurisdiction of the International Crimes Tribunal.

To ensure the process moves efficiently, the ministry has also formed a special committee led by an Additional Secretary of the Law and Justice Division. The committee will oversee the prosecution of murder and other serious criminal cases connected to the unrest.

According to official data, 837 cases have been filed nationwide over the killings and other violent incidents linked to the July Uprising. Of these, 45 are currently being tried at the International Crimes Tribunal, while charge sheets have been submitted in 19 murder cases across various criminal courts.

The committee has been tasked with preparing a comprehensive list of all cases filed over killings and other major crimes committed during the uprising, assessing their current status, identifying procedural and operational challenges in prosecuting charge-sheeted cases, and making recommendations to the government for prompt action. It will also provide periodic updates to affected families and the public on the progress of its work.

Law Ministry officials said the move reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring swift justice and accountability for the victims of the July Uprising.
