MM Rahmatullah: State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam has stressed the importance of building a highly skilled, professional and forward-looking diplomatic corps capable of effectively promoting Bangladesh’s national interests under the government’s “Bangladesh First” policy.

She made the remarks while addressing the Certificate Awarding Ceremony of the Refreshers’ Course for Directors 2026 as the chief guest at the Foreign Service Academy on Thursday.

Highlighting the evolving nature of global diplomacy, the State Minister said Bangladeshi diplomats must develop greater expertise in key areas of national importance, including climate change, transboundary water sharing, migration, free trade agreements, peacekeeping and peacebuilding, and the Rohingya crisis. She emphasized that such specialized knowledge would enable diplomats to respond more effectively to emerging global challenges while safeguarding the country’s strategic interests.

Speaking as the special guest, Ambassador Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam, Secretary (East and West) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, underscored the significance of the annual refresher course in enhancing the professional capabilities of mid-career diplomats. He said the programme equips officers with the knowledge and practical skills needed to address an increasingly complex international environment.

Earlier, Ambassador Muhammad Abdul Muhith, Rector of the Foreign Service Academy, delivered the welcome address. He noted that modern diplomacy demands professionals who are analytical, adaptable, composed and guided by strong ethical values. Reaffirming the Academy’s commitment to excellence, he said the institution would continue to strengthen the capacity of Bangladesh’s diplomatic service through quality training programmes.

The Foreign Service Academy organizes the Refreshers’ Course each year as part of its continuing professional development initiative. This year, 13 directors of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs successfully completed the 2026 course and received certificates at the ceremony.

Senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Foreign Service Academy, along with resource persons associated with the training programme, were also present at the event.
